Different Bra Types
What is a Full Cup Bra?
Exactly what it says on the tin! Full cup bras provide full coverage and unbeatable support. This style is perfect if you want to feel secure and comfortable all day. With straps set closer together, they’re ideal for anyone who struggles with straps slipping off their shoulders.
What is a Balcony/Balconette Bra?
Balconette bras are loved for their rounded shape and fantastic support, offering less coverage than a full cup style. Their wide-set straps join at the side of the cup, making them great for outfits with wider necklines. Curious why balconette bras are a fuller bust favorite? They’re specifically designed to lift and flatter D+ sizes with ease.
What is a Plunge Bra?
Plunge bras feature low centre wires for a deep neckline that’s perfect for low-cut outfits. Don’t be fooled by the reduced coverage – they still provide excellent support! Many fuller-bust women find plunge bras super comfy, especially if high centre wires don’t suit their shape.
What is a Strapless Bra?
Yes, you can go strapless with confidence! Strapless bras are designed with innovative features to prevent slipping while keeping you supported and secure. Perfect for special occasions or off-shoulder outfits, they’re a wardrobe must-have for fuller-bust women.
What is a Sports Bra?
Sports bras keep your bust firmly in place during movement, minimizing bounce and maximizing comfort. Made with supportive fabrics and bounce-tested designs, they let you focus on your workout – not your bra. Whether you're hitting the gym or the trail, there’s a style for you!
What is a Nursing Bra?
Nursing bras are specially crafted for pregnancy and breastfeeding. With drop-down cups and flexible wires or non-wired options, they balance comfort, support, and practicality. They’re an essential for new mums navigating motherhood with a fuller bust.
What is a Non-wired Bra?
Non-wired bras are the ultimate in comfort. Offering light support with a soft fit, they’re perfect for lounging, relaxing, or even all-day wear. For fuller-bust women who value comfort without compromising on style, non-wired bras are a gentle yet supportive option.
What is a T-shirt Bra?
The T-shirt bra is a lingerie staple for every fuller-bust woman. Its seamless or moulded design gives a smooth, rounded shape under clothing, making it ideal for everyday wear. Whether you’re running errands or heading to the office, it’s the bra you’ll reach for time and time again.
Did you know?
Think of bras like shoes – the size that works for you might vary depending on the style, shape, or brand. That’s why expert fittings (like the ones we offer at Shell Lingerie) are so important for finding your perfect fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Find a Bra That Fits?
Here’s what to look for:
- Underband: Firm yet comfortable – it’s the foundation of your support.
- Wires: These should sit flat against your chest, without digging in or gaping.
- Cups: Fully enclose your bust without spilling over or leaving gaps.

How Many Bras Do I Need?
Building your bra wardrobe is about more than just style – it’s about creating a rotation that keeps you supported and your bras in great shape. For fuller-bust women, we recommend having 3 to 5 well-fitting bras in your rotation. Why? Because alternating between bras allows the elastic to recover, extending their lifespan.
- Everyday staples: Aim for 2–3 bras that are your go-to for daily wear. Think balcony, T-shirt bras or full cup styles.
- Special occasions: A plunge or strapless bra for those outfits that need a little extra finesse.
- Activity-focused: Don’t forget a sports bra to keep you secure during workouts or a non-wired bra for relaxing.
When do I Need To Replace A Bra?
Even the highest-quality bras aren’t forever. As a general rule:
- Replace your bras every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you wear them. Signs it’s time for a new one? Worn-out elastic, stretched straps, or cups that no longer fit properly.
When Is It Time To Get Refitted?
Your body is constantly changing, and your bras need to keep up! You should book a refitting if you experience:
- Weight changes – gain or loss can affect your band and cup size.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding – your bust goes through natural changes during and after pregnancy.
- Hormonal changes – shifts due to menopause, hormonal therapies, or other factors can impact your size and shape.
At Shell Lingerie, we recommend refittings every 6-12 months or whenever you notice a change in how your bras fit. A professional fitting ensures you’re always supported and comfortable, no matter where you are on your journey.

Common Bra Terminology
Here's a breakdown of common terms you might hear during a fitting at Shell Lingerie.
Collapsible content
Wires (or Underwires)
A supportive wire that sits under the bust. When fitted correctly, it should lay flat against your chest and comfortably surround your breast tissue – no poking allowed! If you can feel it, its usually the wrong size.
Gore
The centre panel between the cups. A well-fitting gore should sit snugly against your chest, helping keep your bust supported and separated. They sit differently depending on the style of the bra and the bones in your chest.
Straps
The adjustable bands that sit on your shoulders. Straps shouldn’t do all the heavy lifting – that’s the underband’s job – but they help keep everything in place.
Hook-and-Eye Fastening
The closure at the back of your bra. Start on the loosest hook when your bra is new and move to tighter settings as the elastic naturally stretches over time.
Power Panel
A reinforced section of fabric, often located at the sides or in the cups of the bra, designed to add extra support and stability. This clever feature helps anchor the breast in place and enhances the overall lift and shaping – a lifesaver for fuller-bust women!
Forward Projection
A fit characteristic that ensures your bust is gently brought forward instead of spreading outward. It creates a streamlined silhouette under clothes and helps your bra fit better on your frame.
Spacer Foam
A lightweight, breathable material used in some bras. Spacer foam provides coverage and a smooth look without adding bulk or extra padding, making it perfect for everyday comfort.
Apex
The highest point of the cup where the straps meet. A well-designed apex ensures that the bra lifts and shapes beautifully while offering a flattering fit.
Side Support
Panels in the cups designed to bring your bust forward for a more streamlined shape. Great for added structure and a flattering silhouette.
Sister Sizes
Bra sizes with the same cup volume but different band sizes. If the band of your current size feels too loose, you can size down in the band and up in the cup to maintain the same cup volume but a snugger fit. For example, if you're wearing a 36DD but need a firmer band, try a 34E instead. A firmer band provides better support, especially for fuller busts, so finding the right sister size can make a big difference in comfort and fit.
Elastic Recovery
The ability of the elastic in your bra to return to its original shape. Rotating your bras helps maintain their stretch and support for longer.
Padding/Moulding
Additional material in the cups for shape and coverage. Padding doesn’t always mean “push-up” – it’s also great for smooth, natural shaping.
